Although "Linux" is sometimes an acronym for "Linux Is Not UniX", Linux is an operating system kernel that practically complies with POSIX standards, and its name is above all a pun on the name of its creator, Linus Torvalds.
the POSIX standard is not freely available. Obtaining a copy from the IEEE costs several hundred dollars ($500 in December 2015 for an electronic PDF version of the IEEE 1003.1-2013 standard).
