1. Introduction to multithreading
Before discussing multithreading and its hardware implementations, we need to define the notions of process and thread. The French terminology for thread, which stands for light process or thread of execution, is rarely used.
A process provides the resources needed to execute a program. It has a virtual address space, executable code, access to system objects, a security context, a unique process identifier, environment variables, a priority class, minimum and maximum working sizes, and at least one execution thread. Each process is started with a single thread, often called the main thread, but can create additional threads from one of its threads.
