3. Orbit estimation
The motion of a target is predicted from the estimated orbit. The estimate is recalibrated by comparing the prediction with actual observations. Recalibration can be performed globally in delayed time or sequentially in real time. This section presents least-squares smoothing and Kalman filtering.
Global adjustment (or smoothing) consists in finding the "closest" trajectory for a series of observations. This delayed-time operation can be used to estimate gravitational model parameters, or to pinpoint the position of a scientific satellite at the time its observations were made.
