7. Noise on board
Reducing noise on board is a priority. On passenger ships, noise is an essential factor in ship quality. On merchant ships, the crew must be protected from noise in accordance with common law and labor law. .
7.1 Airborne and structure-borne noise
Airborne noise is propagated by the air between its source and the person hearing it. It can be reduced either at source or by the usual means, such as cowlings and insulating walls; a good insulating wall, especially at low frequencies, has a high weight, but this is not usually a problem on a ship.
Structure-borne noise is propagated by structural vibrations. There are various ways of reducing it. Machines and propeller bearings should be mounted on sound-absorbing blocks....
