As with all rail vehicles (whether powered or towed), combustion engine traction is dimensioned according to two major criteria: mass and overall dimensions
3.1 Weight and dimensions
The axle weight (e.g. 15 t, 22.5 t, 32 t) imposed by the track and permissible speed determines the number of axles and bogies on the vehicle. Examples include :
