6. Railway rolling stock and the environment
Until the middle of the 20th century, trains held a monopoly on land mass transport. At a time when the concept of the environment did not exist, railroads were characterized by unparalleled atmospheric pollution, mainly due to the release of steam saturated with carbonaceous slag from steam locomotive traction. But the pollution problem was soon solved by the development of electric traction, particularly for urban transport.
Rail networks are characterized by three types of environmental impact:
the impact of rolling stock on the energy balance of train operations;
the possible discharge of materials ;
rolling noise.
