2. Analysis of surface species by infrared spectroscopy
To improve these catalysts and achieve the efficiency required by the new standards, it is necessary to understand in detail how they work. In the laboratory, the catalyst surface can be studied using a variety of spectroscopic methods. Infrared spectroscopy is particularly effective, flexible and affordable. It is one of the most widely used techniques in heterogeneous catalysis laboratories. It enables the surface of the catalyst to be observed during the reaction. The species that attach themselves to the surface can be detected, and their modifications and evolution towards the final product can be followed, to understand the catalytic reaction.
