3. Instrumental parameters

This section describes the instrumental parameters that affect the performance characteristics of spectrophotometers. These parameters determine, in particular, the spectral range, spectral resolution, stray light ratio, and measurement dynamics, i.e., the range of concentrations that can be measured without having to dilute concentrated samples or concentrate diluted samples.

3.1 Spectral domain

Spectrophotometers in the UV-VIS range cover the range from 190 to 800 nm, with some devices limited to around 220 nm. Some spectrophotometers can also operate in the near infrared, up to 2,500 nm, which bridges the gap with devices designed for the mid-infrared, covering the range 2,500 nm-40,000 nm.
