5. Applications and industrial prospects

A number of applications in which ionic liquids play an essential role as solvents or auxiliaries in organic synthesis are currently being approached or even developed industrially (Table 1 ), either on a pilot scale or at a commercial stage. Two of these are summarized here: the BASIL process, operated by BASF, and the DIFASOL process, developed by IFP.
