Suppository formulation and manufacturing

Rectal forms have been described since antiquity and are still used today. This "ancient" therapeutic form has gradually been abandoned by developed countries in favor of new oral forms deemed more effective and better accepted by patients. By the late 1990s, suppositories were considered to be on the wane. However, since the early 2000s, the scientific community has revived interest in suppositories.

The raw materials used to prepare suppositories are well known and limited, mainly fats such as hydrogenated vegetable oils and hemisynthetic glycerides, or hydrophilic polymers such as polyethylene glycols and gelatin. The very good cost-functionality ratio of these raw materials does not suggest the development of new chemical molecules for this application.
