2. Suppository formulation
As we have already seen, suppository masses are made up of lipophilic
or water-soluble products that dissolve in the rectal ampoule. The
choice of one or other of these categories depends on the properties
of the active ingredient chosen for the targeted therapeutic application.
The solubility of the active ingredient is generally a major criterion
in the choice of suppository mass. For example, hydrophilic active
ingredients can be formulated in lipophilic suppository masses, while
lipophilic active ingredients can be formulated in hydrophilic masses.
In both cases, the suppository enables dispersion of the active ingredient
in the rectal ampoule and facilitates its release.
