4. Different forms of silk matrices used in biomedical applications
Material preparation is based on regenerating fibroin by forcing or promoting its self-assembly from aqueous or non-aqueous solutions. Fibroin solubilization damages the secondary crystalline structure, but retains the integrity of its primary structure, enabling different material morphologies to be obtained.
Films are generally prepared by slow evaporation of a solvent. The solvent may be aqueous or non-aqueous, depending on the intended use and application of the silk biomaterial. The films obtained can then be processed by chemical or structural modifications
