2.1 Crystallography of pure zirconia
Pure zirconia obtained from ore has a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature. The zirconium is coordinated by seven oxygens (figure 1 ). This relatively irregular arrangement partly explains the monoclinic phase's tendency to form macles to minimize lattice distortion.
