Overview
ABSTRACT
Building Information Modeling (BIM) means making and using a shared digital project database to facilitate the process of design, construction and operation. The stakeholders in a BIM process have to manipulate objects, and groups of properties. This article, based on work in progress at buildingSMART France, approaches the different concepts of objects that can appear at different stages of a project. Supported by examples from the building envelope and technical equipment, it shows how these objects can be implemented in IFC.

INTRODUCTION
BIM is the creation and use of a shared digital project database to facilitate the design, construction and operation processes.
Those involved in a BIM process are led to manipulate objects that can be defined as groups of properties in the sense of prEN ISO 23386.
A good understanding and handling of the objects involved is essential for a successful BIM project.
This article is based on work in progress within the buildingSMART France association, the French chapter of buildingSMART International, and more specifically the "Continuation of PRODUCT ROOM work on objects and properties" working group, as well as on the standardization work of the CN AFNOR PPBIM, a mirror of CEN TC442 and ISO TC59/SC13.
