INTRODUCTION
The installation or re-use of open hearth fireplaces, with or without heat recovery, closed hearth fireplaces or fireplace inserts, is becoming increasingly common in both new and existing homes. Their construction and installation must comply with well-defined rules and standards. Failure to comply can have serious safety consequences. When the materials, products or processes used in the construction of a chimney do not comply with French standards, they must conform to the relevant prescriptions set out in DTU 242, or have been the subject of an ATec (Avis Technique).
