This is the function that determines wastewater treatment. The quality of this treatment (screening, sieving, grit removal, degreasing) determines whether it can be recovered for reuse or simply discharged in compliance with standards.

Water purification standards and regulations, whatever their function or origin, are governed by the following texts:

• the water law of January 3, 1992;

• public health, environment and urban planning codes.
