All types of treads and landings can be covered, depending on the use of the building and the frequency with which the staircase is used.

The most commonly used coatings are :

• concrete (for high-frequency applications) ;

• TILES ;

• carpet in strips or tiles;

• plastic or thermoplastic coverings in slabs or strips;

• paints.

Carpets are not recommended in low-rent housing (HLM) or equivalent.
