Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures

To avoid problems associated with corrosion, stainless steel reinforcement can be used. The initial investment cost is higher than that of conventional reinforcement, but the overall cost of the structure must be taken into account, including maintenance over its entire lifetime. As a result, the differences are smaller, and the choice of stainless steel can be an economical one. The development of reinforcements in composite materials (glass fibers) is also underway, but is not yet operational on a large scale.
