When the mason mounts his blocks (20 cm in the case studied), he applies two parallel strands of hydraulic binder mortar (cement and/or lime) to the bottom row. He then lays the upper block, which he adjusts vertically and horizontally.

In this example, we have taken the following characteristics:

• two rods 5 cm wide and 2 cm high;

• the coefficient of linear expansion α is 1 · 10 ^–5 per °C ;

• modulus of elasticity E is 100,000 kg/cm ² .
