ABSTRACT
This article deals with the consideration of accidental actions and situations affecting the supports of bridges crossing inland waterways or maritime waterways and, more generally, fixed obstacles installed in these same lanes.
It includes the consideration of forces due to ship or vessel collisions according to the provisions of the Eurocode standard NF EN 1991-1-7 – Accidental actions.

INTRODUCTION
When a bridge is planned over a waterway or estuary, its design often depends on the protection or resistance of its supports to impacts from boats, ships or large containers. Current events show that such accidents are not uncommon, and always result in significant material damage, with the risk of pollution of the river or sea environment and, sometimes, loss of human life, all of which is difficult for public opinion to accept.
The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of how to approach the problem of protecting piers, where necessary or possible, against accidental actions caused by river or sea traffic.
