8. Modified bitumens
Terminology standard EN 12597 defines modified bitumen as a bitumen whose rheological properties have been modified by the addition of at least one polymer. Mixing may be physical or chemical, but must take place in a plant or mobile unit before use in the final material.
These bitumens are often referred to by the acronym BmP for "Polymer Modified Bitumen".
To date, there are 3 main polymer families:
SB, SBR, SBS and SIS copolymer elastomers;
EVA, EMA, EBA and PIB copolymer plastomers;
vulcanized reclaimed rubber in powder form.
Overall, the aim is to combine the properties of bitumen and polymer.
