The aim of road and pavement design is to provide users with a high level of comfort and safety.

Vehicle movements, vibrations and noise must be limited. The grip available during maneuvers and in different driving situations must correspond to the driver's expectations.

Conversely, the vehicle exerts forces and actions on the pavement that gradually deteriorate it. The pavement's design and choice of materials must ensure that this deterioration, and the corresponding reduction in the level of service, does not occur too quickly.
