5. Sludge dewatering
Dewatering is the second phase in sludge volume reduction. It is carried out on both stabilized and non-stabilized sludge. The aim of dewatering is to achieve an average MS content of between 20% and 30%.
This treatment stage offers several significant benefits. Firstly, by reducing the volume of sludge, it greatly facilitates its storage, which has a direct impact on the management and maintenance costs of these storage sites. In addition, volume reduction through dewatering reduces the cost of transporting these materials. Sludge stabilization is also improved. Dry sludge tends to be less prone to decomposition and can be stored for longer, increasing its safe residence time and reducing the risk of nuisances associated with putrefaction.
