The key requirement of bonding is to make bonded assemblies work in shear, distributing forces over large surfaces.

• Bonding coatings

  As coverings are glued over their entire surface, the mechanical requirements are modest, and a conventional adhesive (acrylic or vinyl emulsion or Neoprene contact adhesive) is generally all that's needed to achieve a sufficiently durable bond, lasting from 8 to 20 years, which is superior to that of coverings that wear out and have to be renewed.

  Continuity solutions, such as joints, simply need to be protected to prevent peeling or degradation by water or other penetrating agents.
