7. Longitudinal wind beams
To reduce the transverse deformations of standard portal frames, the engineer may decide to use a longitudinal wind beam, also known as a long-span wind beam (figure

). This contributes to the overall strength of the structure by creating a lateral support at the head of the column, which limits the displacement of the portal frame under the action of a transverse wind (figure
65
). This system is all the more effective when the structure is transversely flexible, i.e. it is more interesting for portal frames articulated at the legs than for embedded frames.
