2.1 Definitions and field of application

A component is said to be compressed or in pure compression when its ends are subjected to forces that impose a uniform shrinkage on all its fibers. In any given section, the resultant force is reduced to a normal force applied to the section's center of gravity and directed towards the inside of the component (figure ).
