Cold selective materials are part of the passive cooling solutions for buildings, with performances that have been established for numerous case studies: limiting air-conditioning needs (particularly for poorly insulated buildings), limiting summer discomfort (in the case of non-air-conditioned buildings), and treating urban heat islands. The transition from exemplary operations to routine use in building design requires the development of labels and standards guaranteeing the radiative properties of products and their actual characteristics.

Some simplified standards, however, do not allow for the extent of innovations in cold selective products, such as cool colored products which can have a dark color, while achieving a relatively high albedo.
