Fly ash is the residue left over when coal is burned in coal-fired power stations to generate electricity.
The two fuels used in France were lignite (mainly in the South) and hard coal (mainly in the North and East), two sedimentary rocks essentially derived from plant debris that has undergone carbon enrichment, dehydration and depletion of volatile compounds.
Lignite (with woody debris) contains 70 to 75% carbon.
Coal contains 85% carbon.
