Aluminum is supplied in a variety of commercial forms, comparable to those of steel, in a wide range of dimensions and thicknesses. Rolling and extrusion produce wires, solid round and square bars, hollow tubes, angle bars, and U-, I-, T-, or L-shaped profiles.

For sheets and strips, a distinction is made between thin sheets (0.2 to 1 mm thick), medium-gauge sheets (1 to 20 mm), and heavy-gauge sheets (over 20 mm). They can be supplied bare or coated with an adhesive protective film. They can also be clad—that is, laminated with a thin sheet of a highly corrosion-resistant alloy (a process known as Alclad)—or embossed (tear-drop-shaped sheets, known as floor sheets).
