6. Weldability

6.1 General

Homogeneous joints of light alloys do not present any particular welding difficulties; regardless of the alloys involved, there is always a process and a filler metal that can be used to produce a high-performance weld. However, not all alloys behave in the same way, and they can be divided into three classes.

  • Alloys without structural hardening (1000, 3000, and 5000 series)

    They have good weldability. In the annealed condition, they do not experience any significant loss of properties at the weld; in the work-hardened condition, however, work hardening disappears in the vicinity of the weld bead.
