The characteristics of steel

The chemical properties of steel are many and varied. These properties largely determine the possible uses for this material.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, with a carbon content generally varying between 0.2% and 2.1%. However, other elements such as silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium and molybdenum can also be added to steel to improve its properties. The chemical composition of steel is a key factor in determining its mechanical and chemical properties.
