Cornices are elements fitted to the side edges of a bridge, whose main role is to enhance the aesthetics of the structure:
by playing with effects of shape, proportion and color;
keeping water away from vertical facings;
and compensating for structural irregularities.
In recent years, the role of the cornice has shifted sharply towards that of a decorative element, while all other functions (e.g. dripstones, guardrail fastenings, etc.) have been taken over by other constructive arrangements (figure
