9. Special bitumens
As stated in EN 12597, a special bitumen is a bitumen manufactured using processes and selected bases to give it special properties that enable it to meet certain more stringent requirements for road or industrial applications.
A note in paragraph 2.5.3 of standard EN 12597 specifies that this definition includes, but is not limited to, multigrade bitumens, emulsifiable bitumens and pigmentable bitumens.

Multigrade bitumens
They are characterized by a positive Pfeiffer penetrability index of between 0 and 2. Their rheological properties provide an answer to the risk of rutting in wearing courses, while ensuring good resistance to thermal cracking.
