5. Test protocol optimization
The aim is to apply a test protocol, i.e. a sequence of input signals that will reveal the nature of the process, enabling its model to be identified. This dynamic protocol must cover a wide spectrum, since the process cutoff frequency is not known a priori. A first natural idea would be to send white noise, with a spectrum sufficiently broad to match the assumed dynamics. In fact, this academic procedure is not (or only rarely) usable, as the application of a protocol in an industrial setting is subject to severe constraints.
