1. Principle of theoretical analysis and design strategy
The physico-mathematical models (and resulting software tools) used to simulate surface-wave components are, in some cases, highly sophisticated. They are based on the theory of linear elasticity, complicated by the anisotropy of materials, piezoelectricity and the inhomogeneity of wave excitation and propagation media. These models are of two types, either "heuristic" or "exact".
Heuristic models are based on phenomenological representations whose physical foundations are not totally rigorous, although they generally respect basic principles (conservation of electric charge, energy, causality, Lorentz reciprocity). This is the case with one-dimensional models known as "mixed matrix" or their equivalent, known as "COM" (for Coupling Of Modes).
