Small antennas are often natural extensions of feeder lines, so it's worth briefly reviewing the main types (table 1).

The dipole is the most widely used type of antenna. It's simple to build: usually a linear conductor half-wavelength long or less.
In fact, dipoles are the only conceivable antennas when wavelengths become long.
