Semiconductor power components are a category of semiconductor components designed for the conversion and control of electrical energy.
Having first benefited from advances in the microelectronics industry, their development has continued thanks to technologies of their own. Power semiconductor components act as switches, meaning they are sometimes open, sometimes closed. As a result, the physical phenomena involved, which are of course identical to those of other semiconductor components, are used here to fulfill this precise role of switch. The design of power components lies at the intersection of the fields of semiconductor material physics, microelectronics technology and power electronics.
