2. Notions of bands and free carriers in solids
There are two types of solids:
the non-crystalline or amorphous solid in which the atoms or groups of atoms are arranged in a highly irregular, almost random manner;
the crystalline solid, where the arrangement of atoms or groups of atoms has the same regular order over the entire volume of the solid (monocrystalline solid) or at the level of domains, called crystallites (polycrystalline solid).
