3. Memory technology
The technology chosen for a given class of performance or function is the one that achieves the highest densities with industrial yields. CMOS technology is the most widely used, as it enables high integration densities and low power consumption.
Current target complexities are at the level of 1 Gbit per chip on silicon surfaces of 1 to 4 cm

. Consequently, reducing defect rates is imperative when moving towards these high complexities.
