1. Optical Fibers for High Power
In the early stages of high-power fiber laser development, one of the main technological challenges involved the efficient injection of pump light into a fiber core with a very small diameter. Indeed, laser diodes emit low-brightness multimode beams, making it difficult to concentrate sufficient power into the doped core without introducing excessive losses or thermal limitations.
A decisive breakthrough occurred in the late 1980s with the advent of double-clad fibers. This architecture made it possible to decouple the constraints associated with laser signal propagation from those associated with pump guidance. It thus enabled the use of high-power multimode diodes for pumping, while maintaining a core optimized to preserve good spatial beam quality.
