5. Glossary

Transimpedance amplifier

An electronic component consisting of transistors that perform current-to-voltage conversion.

Driver

An electronic component consisting of transistors that drives a transmission line or an optoelectronic component such as a laser or light-emitting diode.

Single-mode optical fiber

An optical fiber with a core diameter of less than 10 micrometers, allowing only a single mode (path) to propagate along its structure.

Multimode optical fiber; multimode fiber

An optical fiber with a core diameter greater than 50 micrometers, allowing a large number of modes (paths) to propagate along its structure.

Laser

An optoelectronic component that converts a flow of electrons (electric current) into a flow of photons (optical power) in a manner that is coherent in both wavelength and phase.

AC mode; AC mode
