2. Theoretical Considerations

2.1 Propagation Overview

There are two approaches to understanding the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in fibers. Comparing these two approaches is helpful for a proper understanding of the rest of this presentation. The first approach, which is the simplest to express mathematically, is based on Snell’s and Descartes’ laws; this is the geometric-optical approach. The second approach takes into account the fact that light is electromagnetic radiation and is therefore based on solving Maxwell’s equations.
