ABSTRACT

Optical-fiber parametric amplifiers are based on the phase-matched four wave mixing process. This class of optical amplifier differs from other fiber-based optical amplifiers in that they possess their own intrinsic properties, such as notably a broad spectral gain band, wavelength tunability and quasi-instantaneous time-response. A possible use is amplification or all-optical information processing in optical telecommunications.

Summary

Fiber-optic parametric amplifiers are based on the four-wave phase-tuned mixing process. This family of optical amplifiers differs in nature from fiber optic amplifiers based on the Raman effect or stimulated emission, and therefore has specific intrinsic properties. The most noteworthy of these are their wide spectral gain, wavelength tunability, frequency conversion properties and virtually instantaneous response time, making them interesting candidates for amplification or all-optical information processing in optical telecommunications.

Abstract

Fiber optical parametric amplifiers rely on the phase-matched four wave mixing process. This class of optical amplifier differs by nature from other fiber-based optical amplifiers such as Raman or erbium-doped ones. As a consequence, their intrinsic properties such as wide spectral gain band, wavelength tunability and quasi-instantaneous time response make them very attractive for telecommunication applications or all-optical processing.
