4. Jones matrices of elementary devices

Polarizers can be broadly classified into two categories according to the properties applied to modify and/or generate the desired polarization (rectilinear, elliptical, etc.):

  • transmission polarizers offer the possibility of absorbing polarized light in one direction and retaining it in only one (dichroic polarizers) (§ 4.1.2 ), or of modifying the linear polarization direction (§ 4.1.4
