4. Conclusion

The process of electrifying transportation and energy production is driven by a shared commitment to decarbonize these sectors. As such, batteries serve as tools for moving toward solutions perceived as more sustainable. This aspiration, however, is at odds with people’s desire to continue enjoying the levels of service, cost, comfort, and safety achieved through the use of fossil fuels. Prioritizing these factors is a political and personal choice, which explains the debates that the reuse of batteries can spark. Some are willing to accept reduced service levels in favor of more environmentally friendly solutions, while others prioritize different aspects. The second life of batteries raises issues on several fronts and highlights research topics and areas for improvement that should be promoted.
