3. Alternating current (AC) sources

3.1 Synchronous generator

The alternator is the most widely used rotating machine for generating alternating current. Alternators are generally three-phase, which is what we're talking about here. They are "excited" either by a permanent magnet, or by a field winding through which direct current flows.

In the case of line flow, a simple alternator model can be that of an ELR circuit (figure 12 ).
