The DC side of current switches is seen by the converter as a current source, irrespective of its role as generator or receiver. This branch can be a perfect source of direct current, or a dipole in series with an inductor (instantaneous current source). On the AC side, the electrical system must have the nature of a voltage source: AC voltage source or associated dipole in parallel with a capacitor (instantaneous voltage source).
Direct current is alternately switched to the voltage branch, which can effectively withstand the corresponding current discontinuities.
