4. Semi-classical transport theory

In this final section, we focus on establishing Bloch's equation of electron motion without explicitly taking into account the band structure, which we assume to be known either by calculation or measurement.

4.1 Bloch electron speed

For a particle in a quantum box, the wave vector $\vec{k}$ is a good quantum number, i.e. it directly determines the particle's energy, in this case its kinetic energy. Thus, the velocity of the particle can be directly deduced from this quantum number in a trivial way, assuming that the classical formula E _c = 1/2mv ²...
