The dielectric strength of a material is the maximum value of the electric field that can be applied to it without irreversible degradation, known as dielectric breakdown or perforation, making it impossible to apply voltage again. Breakdown is preceded by a significant increase in the current flowing through the material, with destructive thermal consequences: melting, evaporation, decomposition, carbonization, etc.
