On Thursday, October 10, at around 5 p.m., it was known that a situation had arisen at Windscale No. 1 pile that could lead to the release of radioactive substances into the surrounding countryside.
In fact, the release of activity, mainly through the 125 m chimney (which limited air contamination on the site), lasted from October 10 at 2:00 pm to October 11, 1957 at 11:00 am....
